While quantum computing is becoming an increasingly common feature of science-fiction films and TV series, it is also beginning to take over our daily technological news. However, it will certainly be many years before we see quantum computers with the prodigious computing power and acceptable error rates we have all been hoping for. In what follows, we take a look at why and how the world of cloud providers is already in the race for the quantum cloud, even though these machines are still in their infancy.
Why will the cloud be essential? As much as it's difficult to know what kind of qubit and technology will scale up to achieve the "useful" quantum advantage, it's clear that the cloud will be at the center of quantum computing technology development. Firstly, for economic reasons. A quantum computer is expensive, and being able to test by the hour or on a flat-rate basis without having to buy the machine will be much cheaper than investing in a model that could quickly become outdated,...
