Jean-Marc CHÉRY, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, STMicroelectronics
Winner of the Manager's Award

Interview with Jean-Marc CHÉRY

Hello Jean-Marc Chéry. You're an iconic industry boss. Can you give us a brief overview of your career?

I trained as an engineer and spent almost my entire career at ST, even though I started out at Matra. In 1986, I joined Thomson Semiconducteurs, which later became STMicroelectronics. After managing the Tours and Rousset plants, I was appointed head of ST's Front-End Manufacturing activities in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2008 I became Chief Technology Officer, also in charge of Production and Quality (from 2011) and the Digital Products sector (from 2012). Appointed Chief Operating Officer, responsible for production operations and technology for the Company in 2014, I became, from 2017, Deputy CEO with overall responsibility for production operations and technology for the whole Company as well as sales and marketing. Since May 2018, I have been Chairman of the Executive Board and Chief Executive Officer of STMicroelectronics. As you can see, the industry, in all its facets, is for me a passion that I strive to pass on.

What makes STMicroelectronics special?

ST is a designer and manufacturer of microelectronic components.
This means that we design our products, sometimes in collaboration with our customers, manufacture the majority of them ourselves, and sell them to our 200,000 customers, who then assemble them in their systems, such as telephones, cars, industrial equipment, satellites and so on. Our technologies contribute to decarbonization by enabling more sober and intelligent mobility, more efficient energy and power management, and large-scale deployment of IoT and wireless connectivity. We are committed to achieving our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2027.*

We are a global player in High Tech, with 14 production sites worldwide. Of our 50,000 employees, over 9,000 work in R&D, where we invest 12% of our sales! The recent shortage of integrated circuits has highlighted what we've known for a long time and which guides our business model: mastery of the semiconductor supply chain is a major asset for our customers and partners.

What recommendations would you make to Télécom Paris graduates to encourage them to join the microelectronics industry?

First of all, I'd like to tell them that joining our industry means working in a profession with impact! At ST, we play a key role in supporting the major societal transformations of digitalization and the ecological transition.

Secondly, it's an exciting industry for young graduate engineers and researchers: we're pushing back the limits of semiconductor technologies, developing products that in 5 to 10 years' time will revolutionize the way we live, move around, communicate... We're upstream of it all!

Finally, it's a fast-growing sector. According to forecasts, worldwide demand for semiconductors is set to double in 10 years, reaching $1,000 billion by 2030. As a result, the potential and diversity of careers in microelectronics is considerable, and the engineers trained at our leading engineering schools have an excellent reputation.
So go ahead and join us!
