Pasqal
Winner of the Quantum Innovation Prize
How did your company come into being and develop?
Pasqal is several stories in one! It's the story of forty years of fundamental research, the story of the epic quantum revolution that is proving its worth, today and tomorrow. It's the story of our national pride, of our excellence, which is deployed the world over. And finally, it's about visionary researchers becoming entrepreneurs, paving the way for a new generation of entrepreneurs.
Today, the promise of quantum computing is being realized, unlocking its potential in a wide range of fields: energy, industry, finance, transport, logistics and healthcare.
Pasqal grew out of the pioneering work of Professor Alain Aspect - which earned France a well-deserved Nobel Prize - as well as that of Dr. Georges-Olivier Reymond, Dr. Christophe Jurczak, Dr. Antoine Browaeys and Dr. Thierry Lahaye. All shared a bold vision: to make quantum computing an industrial reality. This pragmatism has enabled us to move from a renowned laboratory to a cutting-edge start-up.
Pasqal is a skill, a product and a service. It's a company focused on its customers and their needs, bringing a technology that will enter our lives without invading our homes... or polluting: our computers consume the energy equivalent of four hair dryers. Above all, quantum is a decisive factor in decarbonization, playing a key role in the ecological transition.
Pasqal also embodies our industrial sovereignty, radiating internationally and creating jobs. The inauguration of our plant in 2022 marked a turning point for French and European deeptech.
What are the prospects for development?
Tomorrow, our aim is to continue to lead the global competition, expand internationally and serve our customers ever better. Pasqal's track record is reflected in its growth trajectory since its creation in 2019. With over €140 million in financing, including a record €100 million fundraising in 2023, the company now has 200 employees across three continents and seven countries. It is the leader in an $850 billion market, offering an industrial quantum advantage that enables complex problems to be solved faster and at lower energy cost. impartial development opportunities.
What's special about your company? What makes you different?
It's that, thanks to our cutting-edge teams, we've been able to develop a technology that can be put to practical use today. Pasqal is proud to be a leader in its sector, having delivered on its promise of sober technology to support the ecological transition.
How do you see the world in 10 years' time, in the light of the ecological transition?
We live in a world of unparalleled complexity. The challenges we face have never been greater: the ecological transition will be our priority! Quantum computing is an adventure similar to that of the space industry in the 1950s. The context favors the appropriation of more powerful systems, to apprehend reality and take up the challenges at the service of the common good.
In a few words :
PASQAL builds quantum computers based on neutral atom technology, ordered in 2D and 3D arrays. The aim is to bring a practical quantum advantage to its customers in solving real-world problems, particularly in quantum simulation and optimization.
PASQAL was founded in 2019 by Georges-Olivier Reymond, Christophe Jurczak, Professor Dr Alain Aspect (Nobel Prize in Physics 2022), Dr Antoine Browaeys and Dr Thierry Lahaye.
Based in Palaiseau and Massy, south of Paris, PASQAL has secured over 140 million euros in combined equity and non-dilutive funding from Temasek, EIC Fund, WAED Ventures, Quantonation, Fonds pour l'Innovation de la Défense, Runa Capital, BPI France, ENI and Daphni.
In early 2022, Qu&Co, the European champion of quantum software, merged with PASQAL. The aim was to combine Qu&Co's portfolio of quantum algorithms with the power of PASQAL's neutral atom quantum computers, bringing the quantum advantage one step closer for industrial customers and partners.
In early 2023, PASQAL raised 100 million euros in Series B equity financing, the largest in Europe.
