OPEN RAN: A Breakthrough in Mobile Networks - Why?
Organised by "Networks & Services"
Mobile network technologies are constantly evolving, as demonstrated by the current rollout of 5G. However, this is accompanied by the implementation of new concepts around the virtualization of functions, whether in the network core and/or in radio access. Striking the right balance between offshoring processing closer to subscribers and using software in the cloud, while keeping latency targets low, is a real challenge. In recent years, this has led to the development of the OPEN RAN (Open Radio Access Network) principle.paration between hardware parts (antenna, real-time radio processing) and software parts, which can then be made to reside in a Cloud (private or public). It goes without saying that operators and manufacturers, whether incumbent or alternative, are paying close attention to this development, and are taking a direct part in it, for example within the OPEN RAN Alliance, which brings together numerous players in the field, and aims in particular to standardize software interfaces, carry out interoperability tests, and so on...
The Groupe Réseaux & Services therefore decided to address this topic in the form of two webinars, two weeks apart.
First webinar: "Why?
Why introduce these new architectures, with what stakes, what objectives? The program will be as follows:
- Introduction: The Open RAN concept by Michel Levy (1975), MSBD
- The point of view of an incumbent operator: Arnaud Vamparys (1995), Orange
- The point of view of an alternative operator: Marc Rouanne, DISH
- The Open RAN Alliance and its players: Igor Marty, Lenovo France
This presentation will be followed by a round-table discussion/question-and-answer session.
