Decarbonizing maritime transport: where do we stand?

Organised by "Energy"

Decarbonation

The "Energy" Group presents this webinar organized by "Centrale-Énergies" and "Centrale Métiers de la Mer":

Sales pitch

With the widespread use of containers, invented in 1956, international maritime trade has seen an explosion in the volume of sea freight, from around 2,600 million tonnes of goods in 1970 to 11,000 million tonnes in 2021.
While transport by sea accounts for almost 90% of current world trade and is essential to our activities, it also accounts for almost 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and if we were to consider it as a country, it would rank among the top 10 biggest emitters.

An energy-efficient means of transport in relation to the volumes transported, shipping is nonetheless almost exclusively dependent on fossil fuels, and must now make an unprecedented energy transition in order to meet the target set by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) of reducing emissions to zero by 2050.
- Where do we stand on these objectives?
- What levers are at our disposal?
- What strategies have been put in place?
- What are our chances of success?

Speakers

Luc Gillet and Erwan Jacquin, two specialists with long experience of maritime issues, have been invited to share their knowledge of these issues and express their opinions.

- Luc Gillet, ENSTA engineer (1980). He began his career as a structural and pipe-laying engineer at ETPM, then moved on to Bureau Veritas, where he was Technical Director of Tecnitas and of the Research Center in Brazil, before leaving the company as Director of Marine Branch Operations. He then joined TotalEnergies as Deputy Director, then Director of Marine Transport. Luc was awarded the Prix Génie Maritime Maurice Lebrun 2022 by the Académie de Marine. Luc continues to be an active lecturer, among other things, at various engineering schools on the issues of Maritime Transport and Energy Transition.

- Erwan Jacquin, engineer (1998) and doctor (2007) in naval hydrodynamics from Centrale Nantes. He is an entrepreneur and technical expert in the maritime field, which he has developed over the past 25 years as Director of Research & Innovation at CMA CGM, CEO of Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore, founder and CEO of engineering company HydrOcean and software publisher Nextflow Software, and at the start of his career as Head of Resistance and Propulsion at the DGA hull test basin. Erwan is the winner of the Académie de Marine's Henri Kummerman 2020 Ship Design and Operation Award. Since 2023, Erwan has been founding president of MEET2050.
