Conference: "Voice services on 4G mobile networks".

The Télécom ParisTech alumni "Networks and Services" group is organizing a conference/debate on the theme of

Voice services on 4G mobile networks
With the deployment of 4G mobile networks,
the question can be asked about the future of voice services on these networks.

To discuss the various aspects of these developments, TTélécom ParisTech alumni's Networks and Services Group has brought together a number of experts in the field:
  • Introductory presentation :
André Pérez (1973), Consultant, author of the book "la voix sur LTE, réseau 4g et architecture IMS".
  • An operator's point of view :
Philippe Lucas, Senior Vice President International Standards and Industry Relationships at Orange and member of the GSMA Executive Committee
  • Point of view of a terminal manufacturer :
Paul Jolivet (1995), Director of Standards and Advanced Technologies at LG Electronics
  • Point of view of a telecom network manufacturer :
Frédéric Vergnaud, Pre-Sales Manager for core offerings at Ericsson France.

Whereas 2G mobile networks were primarily designed to offer a high-quality switched voice service, with the added possibility of transmitting low-speed data (GPRS, EDGE), the new generations, 3G and especially 4G, are essentially designed to offer data services, the uses of which (e-mail, Internet searches, voice and video streaming, etc.) are developing exponentially with the widespread use of smartphones, marginalizing voice services.

Especially as the range of voice services has greatly diversified, with the multiplication of end-to-end voice-over-IP offers from OTTs such as Skype, Viber, WhatsApp, Facetime, WeChat... These offers, which are free or virtually free, compete directly, especially internationally, with the traditional dial-up voice offerings of telecom operators.

The world of mobile networks and services had to anticipate these developments, with operators' own objectives of ensuring voice service continuity between networks and mobile terminals, whatever their generation. To this end, 3GPP has defined VoLTE (Voice over LTE), currently being deployed by operators, which is a native voice-over-IP service, enabling interconnection with all terminals connected to fixed or mobile switched networks. Pending the deployment of VoLTE, 3GPP has defined the CSFB (Circuit Switch Fall Back) mechanism, which enables LTE terminals to switch voice and SMS services to previous-generation networks. Last but not least, voice over WiFi is on the rise, offering greater comfort in buildings.

And in line with this obligation on operators to ensure interoperability between different generations of networks and terminals, the question arises of the future of the first generations of mobile networks, whose frequencies are much sought-after for new data offers...

Following presentations by each speaker, there will be a question-and-answer session.

Participation is free, but registration is required on the Telecom ParisTech Alumni website.
The conference is open to all, so please feel free to share the invitation.
