Is upward mobility and success really a matter of merit?

Is the American dream of the guy who builds himself up from nothing, and by the sweat of his brow becomes one of the world's greats, not just a myth?

Does a meritocratic school system provide equal opportunities for all?

Is this system compatible with the democratic ideal upheld in our society?

The ideology of merit-based classification is present everywhere in our society: the dynamic young start-up creator versus the lazy unemployed person who lives off society; the slender, athletic woman versus the woman who eats chocolate on the sofa; or the militant who is exemplary in his daily practices versus the person who enjoys a fast food every now and then.

In this gesticulated lecture, Lola Guillot takes us behind the scenes of her career at the prestigious École Polytechnique, which she entered via a socially inclusive route.

Far from the usual slogans on equal opportunities, this gesticulated lecture analyzes the encounter between "diversities" and the selection mechanisms that form the basis of the meritocratic system.
